Definitions

Vulvadynia:

Chronic burning, itching or pain without an identifiable cause that persists for three months or longer.

Sonohysterogram:

Ultrasound examination of the uterus and fallopian tuebs using a contrast material. During this procedure the physician is able to view and assess function and structure.

Fetal Non-stress Testing:

A belt is placed around the mother’s abdomen with an external fetal heart rate monitor attached to measure fetal heart rate combined with fetal movement.

Urodynamics Testing:

Uses the Lumax TS Pro Fiberoptic Cystometry System (Lumbx TS Pro), which is a state-of-the-art fiberoptic pressure transducer. The purpose of the studies done during this procedure is to evaluate the anatomic and functional status of the bladder and urethra, reproducing the patient’s symptoms. Catheters are placed in the bladder and vagina or rectum. Fluid is infused in a controlled fashion to determine various characteristics about bladder function.

The system is operated by a nurse and assistant under direct supervision of Dr. Keith Heslinger. The patient is in our office for approximately 45 minutes while undergoing testing, then returns for a follow-up visit to discuss results and determine a plan of action if necessary.

Essure:

This procedure is a method of permanent birth control (also known as sterilization). Unlike tubal ligation and vasectomy, the Essure procedure does not involve cutting into the body and can be done without general anesthesia. The procedure had been performed in the operating room in a hospital setting in the past and is now being offered as an in-office procedure. It is the first alternative to tubal ligation for women in the United States. Tens of thousands of Essure procedures have been performed worldwide since 1998. The Essure procedure is covered by most health insurance plans. The procedure is done by inserting a flexible device called a micro-insert into each fallopian tube. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes. Women are typically discharged from the office approximately 45 minutes after the completion of the procedure.

Novasure:

The NovaSure System is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that is the newest alternative to hysterectomy and hormone therapy for the treatment of excessive menstrual bleeding. NovaSure uses a slender hand-held device and controller which generates and delivers an amount of radiofrequency energy which is designed to permanently eliminate the lining of the uterus in a single 90-second treatment. The entire procedure takes approximately 5 minutes. It can be performed in the physician’s office and does not require general anesthesia.
